Children

A Poem Broadside

An Exploration in Typography

I wanted explore ways to integrate typography and imagery together. I was presented a list of poems to by poets from all around the world. From there I brainstormed different ways imagery could add further meaning or description to the poem.

My Solution

I chose the poem “Children” written by Julian Kornhauser and translated by Piotr Florczyk. I was inspired this poem because it reminded me of my own children and my observations of them. I revised my project three times, working to find different ways the photographs could best represent the poem. I started by searching through pictures of my own children that I thought best fit the imagery expressed in the poem. I wanted to focus on images of my children where they were having fun, where something unknown caught their attention, and when they were using their imagination.

Re-Visions

In my original poster design I wanted to integrate bubbles with photographs of my children because bubbles are whimsical and a staple of childhood. As time went on I decided the poster needed some revisions. I began with adding more colors and experimenting more with the text. I was inspired by the ball pits that kids play in. I decided to integrate those colors by using them as an overlay over the pictures of my children, the bright vibrant colors added extra energy to the poster.

Since graphic design projects are never really finished, I revised my poster once again so that the main focus was the bright letter figures that overlay images of my children. I added the text as an outline so the viewer had to interact with the poster.
